Acute urinary retention
Urinary retention refers to the inability to completely empty the bladder. This can be extremely painful and is often caused by a constriction below the bladder, which in turn is caused by an enlarged prostate or scarring. Shortly after bladder or prostate surgery, clotted blood can clog the outlet, thereby leading to urinary retention.
Diagnostics
Scanning of the lower abdomen and ultrasound
Therapy
Urinary catheterisation, which leads to immediate relief for the patient. A subsequent cystoscopy is one potential method for determining the cause of urinary retention.
