Intensive care medicine

Intensive care medicine or critical care medicine is a branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and management of life-threatening conditions requiring sophisticated organ support and invasive monitoring. The specialist in intensive care medicine has at his disposal everything that is needed to resuscitate a patient and restore the normal functions of the organs. He has in-depth knowledge of the drugs and equipment that are required to do this, such as the ventilator, or the defibrillator that uses electric current to correct malfunctions in the muscles of the heart.
